Logic Map 7

New from VDO: Nautical chart plotter with high-tech colour display
Electronics make life easier for the skipper: VDO now provides the facility of showing digitialized nautical charts on a high-resolution high-tech coloured display (TFT). This adds a further plotter to the state of the art VDO Logic series launched on the market. VDO Logic Map 10 and VDO Logic Map 8 have been enjoying success on the market since the beginning of 1996. VDO is exhibiting the new colour plotter at the Boot '98 in Düsseldorf between the 17th and 25th January 1998. This new feature considerably improves the clarity of nautical charts. Depth details and lines can be seen optimally.

The new colour plotter works like the two two-colour versions with the standard C-map CF-95 electronic nautical chart. The mini modules with C-Map chart material are inserted in a module slot on the underside of the unit. C-Map provides the largest nautical chart library in the world with more than 8000 nautical charts.

With the VDO plotters the skipper can plan his routes in advance. All navigation details can be programmed at home in peace on a 12 V voltage source. He should still, however, have classic nautical charts on board.

He can set his route in different colours with the new high-tech colour plotter. This makes orientation much easier. Interim destinations are easier to locate and simpler to control during the course.

Just as easily, up to ten course plots can be programmed and displayed in five different colours. Travelling the same course several times and repeating a course as well as setting daily destinations is thus supported.

The option to choose between a north-up and head-up function is another advantage. Whilst with the conventional north-up function north is always on the top edge of the plotter, the new head-up function of the VDO colour plotter enables the nautical chart to be aligned with the respective course. The destination thus always appears in front.

The VDO colour plotter works with 16 different colours to achieve the various displays. This helps to optimally identify various areas where the depth of water differs.

The LC display can be switched over to night-time design for a particularly contrasting colour display. With 640 x 480 pixels and background illumination it enables the display to be read from virtually any angle and any installation variant. In addition the large display screen diagonals (visual range 23 centimetres) increase readability and facilitate navigation without compasses and pencil.

The VDO colour plotter has a serial interface to existing GPS satellite navigation systems, for example the VDO Logic GPS. The skipper sees all GPS data such as geographic longitude and latitude, course and speed, satellite status etc. at a glance.

If, apart from a compass and log, a wind measuring system is onboard which provides NMEA data, the geographic wind direction appears in the colour nautical chart upon request. If the VDO logic navigation system is connected, or a navigation system which provides NMEA data, this data is also displayed in a separate window.

A total of ten routes can be assigned each with 500 route points or markings, for example for a good fishing ground, a good place for a swim, a place to anchor or an obstacle.

The VDO colour plotter records distances covered (500 points per recording) so that the skipper can trace the actual course travelled. In conjunction with the GPS signal, the plotter even indicates the direction in which the boat is moving by means of a vector arrow.

The combination with an autopilot on board makes it possible to travel on a fixed course from route point to route point. The corresponding course lines are developed by the software and displayed graphically.

With an existing NMEA depth sounder even the actual water depths can be displayed on the VDO colour plotter. Alarms on reaching interim destinations and marks as well as the destination can be stored. A man overboard function enables the current position to be stored. The VDO colour plotter has additional display functions including listing satellites currently receivable.

The VDO colour plotter only takes a small current from the electrical system. It is resistant to noise irradiation and radiation in accordance with the CE standard. A pivoting base is included. The unit is splash-proof and designed for use in closed navigating bridges and on the chart table.
